What is juicing?

With juicing, the juices from fruits and vegetables are extracted either by grating the produce into pulp and then spinning the liquid out of it (which is a centrifuge juicer) or by a process called mastication, which is basically like chewing – it’s a crushing and squeezing action.

What are the benefits of juicing?

  • A lot of fruits and veggies go into one cup of juice, more than you could probably eat in one setting or day, thus you are getting a lot of nutrients from one cup of juice.
  • Within minutes after you drink freshly made juice, your cells receive a highly concentrated dose of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. This provides your body with exactly what it needs to function well, thus you feel more energized.
  • The juice is in a liquid form, so you give your digestive system a rest, as it doesn’t have to break down the solid food. Another pointer, it hydrates you.
  • Juicing has an alkalizing effect on your body, which helps to balance your pH. The pH scale runs from 0-14, with 7 being neutral. Below 7 is acidic, above 7 is alkaline or basic. Our blood is tightly regulated between 7.35-7.45. When our blood becomes too acidic it can lead to many ugly symptoms and eventually chronic diseases.
  • Overall, juicing can increase energy, decrease inflammation, cleanse, detox, etc.

What is blending?

With blending, whole fruits and vegetables are put into a high-powered blender and liquid (usually water) is added to the contents and is blended at a high speed. Thus the result is a thicker drink full of fiber.

What are the benefits of blending?

  • You use the whole fruit and veggie so there is no pulp left over. This provides you with a more filling drink due to the fiber.
  • The fiber helps to remove toxins from your body. It also allows more stable blood sugars, which will also help to regulate weight.
  • Most importantly, dark leafy greens blend very well. Greens are the only living thing that can transform sunshine into the food that all creatures can consume. The life purpose of all greens is to produce chlorophyll, which augments the body’s ability to produce hgb, which in turn strengthens the delivery of oxygen to your cells.
  • Many different options for recipes.

Are there side effects from drinking juice and blends?

Our juice contains fresh fruits and vegetables. If you do not regularly consume fresh fruits and veggies, you may experience a cleansing effect related to digestion. This is a normal response. It is your body's way of making room for more healthy food.

For more specific details on this cleansing effect, feel free to email us, or talk to us at the Wednesday night events on campus in the Mulford Garden Cafe (room 029 in the basement). Please be careful if you are sensitive to fresh fruits and vegetables. We hope you enjoy juicing as much as we do!

Do you need expensive equipment to begin juicing/blending?

Absolutely not! All you need are fresh ingredients, a blender, and a determination to eat healthier. Better juicers and blenders, however, are worthwhile investments for both taste and efficiency (but not at all necessary).

I'm not a UT Student, can I still join?
