5 Lesser-Known Places Affiliated With the University of Toledo

While most people may know that the University of Toledo spans across two campuses — its Main Campus and Health Science Campus — you may not know about these other places that are tied to the university throughout the region. Next time you’re up for some exploration, consider visiting one of these lesser-known locations that the University of Toledo owns and operates.

The Center for Alumni and Donor Engagement is located on Dorr Street, a mile and a half west of the University of Toledo’s Main Campus. Occupying an area of over 100 acres, the location includes a building with more than 140,000 square feet of space, which is also home to Welltower Inc., a Toledo-based corporation. Welltower Inc. donated the land to the University of Toledo in 2017 at a valuation of about $30 million. The Center for Alumni and Donor Engagement acts as an event space and a central location for the University of Toledo’s alumni-related organizations, including the University of Toledo Foundation and the University of Toledo Alumni Association.

While the University of Toledo sold the Scott Park Campus to Toledo Public Schools in 2023, the athletic facilities of Scott Park remain. The Scott Park Athletic Complex, located a mile and a half south of the university’s Main Campus, is currently home to the University of Toledo’s baseball and softball programs. The area features a baseball and softball field along with the Findlay Athletic Complex, an indoor training facility that houses spaces for lockers, equipment, training and coaches’ offices. The Scott Park Athletic Complex may not remain for much longer; as part of the University of Toledo’s current master plan, the baseball and softball facilities plan to be moved to the Main Campus in the near future.

The Center for Visual Arts is located in downtown Toledo at the Toledo Museum of Art. Designed by prominent architect Frank Gehry, the four-story building originally opened in 1993. The Center for Visual Arts has spaces available for photography, painting, drawing, sculpture studies and more, along with hosting most of the University of Toledo’s courses in art education and art history. It is home to the Art Print Center, a student-staffed print shop located in the CVA, which provides full-service options to the university and community. It also hosts the Toledo Museum of Art Reference Library, an art research library that carries resources about the Toledo Museum of Art and art as a whole.

The UToledo Lake Erie Center is a research and education facility that specializes in environmental science and aquatic ecosystems. It is located fifteen miles east of the University of Toledo’s campus in Oregon, Ohio, directly across from the shores of Lake Erie. It is also close to Maumee Bay State Park for those seeking to learn and explore more about the natural habitats of the region. The 30,000 square foot building has laboratories, classrooms, offices and a community engagement center. The Lake Erie Center offers research opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students, including summer internships.

Nestled in a 47-acre plot four and a half miles northwest of the University of Toledo’s Main Campus, the Stranahan Arboretum is a natural area that features many different kinds of ornamental trees, woods, ponds, wetlands and a restored prairie. The land was donated to the University of Toledo in 1964 in memory of Robert Stranahan, founder of the Toledo-based Champion Spark Plug Company. The arboretum is most frequently used by the university’s Department of Environmental Science as a field site and outdoor laboratory, although it also hosts educational programs for area students.
